winter snow march 2018

Winter Snow – March 2018

Finally we have some snow, not much but its something, the rest of the UK has had a good covering and lots of people having problems with power and travel. Cornwall dose get less snow than other parts of the UK and we knew this before we moved. Our youngest child is 4 and has never seen show, to her this was a great days and she was first out to play in it. School was closed for a few days, it is quite rural and some teachers live on the moors and in small villages. As I work from

Birthday Weekend at Sandymouth Bay

It was our sons birthday and he wanted to take a few friends to a swimming and soft play party at a local holiday park, we arranges the party and then thought it would be nice to go and stay for the weekend. We booked a static caravan for the weekend and had a lovely spot on the site, see the view in the blog photos. On the day of the party all of his fiends arrived, but so did the Fire Service, there had a been a fat fire in the kitchen of the restaurant. Unfortunately they were then

A few days in Scotland for a family memorial

100 Years ago my wife’s great grandfather died in the first world war. The family are commemorating the centenary of the death of the Rev. John Davis, minister of Buittle parish church, who died on 22 July 1917 on active service with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Mesopotamia. A service of remembrance is being held on 29th July 2017, this date fits around family commitments. Full details of the life history and military service of John Davis can be found on this site: http://www.ministerinmesopotamia.com/ Our trip started early on the 28th of July, the aim was to be in

Vegetable Growing 2017

In an Earlier Post we discussed the repair of the raised beds and the initial planting of vegetable seeds. We have had our first crop of Potatoes and Cabbage, very nice and the kids even ate some of the cabbage. The greenhouse produced great plants that went out into the raised beds, Beetroot, Cabbage, Little Gen Lettuce, Pumpkins, Spinach and Runner Beans. Some veg was planted directly into the soil, Onions and Potatoes.                 Currently we have 4 Cucumber plants and 4 Sweet Pepper plants growing in the Greenhouse. A new raised bed

Summer Flowers

Its now July 2017 and we have been here for just over a year, The previous owners were really keen gardeners and we are reaping the benefits now with some beautiful summer flowers in the garden. My wife has been keeping the weeds down, a little area of garden every few days keeps them in check. I manage the Veg and produce growing, lots of weeds there as well. An update on the veg coming soon. Compost production is going well, we have 4 bays for the waste, each one is approx 4 ft x 4ft, the compost is placed

Greenhouse Hydroponics

Greenhouse Hydroponics

I have always wanted to try growing plants using hydroponics, the main reason is the fact that you can get a higher density in a small area. If we were to grow strawberries in the garden then we would be looking at 3 or 4 plants per square ft. Growing strawberries in horizontal hydroponics allows us to grow 4 or five times as much. We tried Strawberries but they did not survive, switching to swiss chard and we have had good success. A Small 30watt solar panel connected through a charge controller to an old car battery. From the battery

2016 Review

2016 has be a great year overall, we found a great house in a nice village, moved in, tow of our children started a really nice school and we have made friends. Its been busy, we had to relocate the business, not easy to be without broadband for 8 weeks while we moved but there are quite a few small business centers around were you can rent a desk for a day or even an office. My wife has made some new friends, this is very important, we still have one child that is not at school full time so

Storm Angus – Local Flooding

Out the of the village we live in there are 4 roads, 2 of which were flooded yesterday, one of which was passable in the 4×4 for a while but later in the day it was closed off. We spent a while looking at other routes on the map and found a way to the kids school. Hopefully this morning all will be well, there is a local facebook group that lets people know if one of the roads is flooded. At least there is no damage done to our house or any in the village.
